چکیده

Abstract. The Petermann 2015 expedition to Fjord and adjacent Hall Basin recovered a transect of cores, extending from Nares Strait underneath the 48 km long ice tongue glacier, offering unique opportunity study ice–ocean–sea interactions at interface these realms. First results suggest that no existed in for large parts Holocene, raising question role ocean marine cryosphere collapse re-establishment tongue. Here we use multi-proxy approach (sea-ice-related biomarkers, total organic carbon its isotopic composition, benthic planktonic foraminiferal abundances) explore Holocene sea dynamics OD1507-03TC-41GC-03PC outer Fjord. Our are line with tight coupling terrestrial this region and, connection other regional reconstructions, give insights into evolution arches associated landfast Strait. late stages Thermal Maximum (6900–5500 cal yr BP) were marked by reduced seasonal concentrations lack arch formation. This was followed transitional period towards Neoglacial cooling 5500–3500 BP, where southern might have formed, but an early breakup formation likely caused prolonged open water season enhanced pelagic productivity Between 3500 1400 records stable northern only, short 2500–2100 BP formed intermittently response atmospheric spikes. A arch, or even double arching, is also inferred after BP. Thus, both inception small ? 2200 rapid expansion 600 preceded transition regime Strait, suggesting stabilizing effect on Glacier.

Holocene cooling culminates in sea ice oscillations in Fram Strait

A reconstruction of Holocene sea ice conditions in the Fram Strait provides insight into the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographic development of this climate sensitive area during the past 8500 years BP. Organic geochemical analyses of sediment cores from eastern and western Fram Strait enable the identification of variations in the ice coverage that can be linked to changes in the oceani...

Ice in a Floating Ice Tongue

Stable isotope analysis has been used successfully to distinguish between several different ice types in an ice tongue floating on sea water in Antarctica. At one critical location this technique has provided the only means of discriminating unambiguously between glacial ice and fresh-water ice formed from desalinated sea water. This part of the ice tongue is now underlain by a layer of desalte...

Frost flower formation on sea ice and lake ice

[1] Frost flowers are clusters of ice crystals found on freshly formed sea ice and occasionally on frozen lakes. They belong to a class of vapour-related phenomena that includes freezing fog, hoar frost and dew. It has hitherto been supposed that they form by condensation from a supersaturated atmosphere or from water wicked up through porous sea ice. Here we show that they can form on solid, p...

Recent wind driven high sea ice area export in the Fram Strait contributes to Arctic sea ice decline

Arctic sea ice area has been decreasing for the past two decades. Apart from melting, the southward drift through Fram Strait is the main ice loss mechanism. We present high resolution sea ice drift data across 79 N from 2004 to 2010. Ice drift has been derived from radar satellite data and corresponds well with variability in local geostrophic wind. The underlying East Greenland current contri...

Formation of brine channels in sea ice.

Liquid salty micro-channels (brine) between growing ice platelets in sea ice are an important habitat for CO2-binding microalgaea with great impact on polar ecosystems. The structure formation of ice platelets is microscopically described and a phase field model is developed. The pattern formation during solidification of the two-dimensional interstitial liquid is considered by two coupled orde...
